About Thorp Perrow Arboretum

Thorp is a common place name of an Old Norse origin meaning hamlet or small village. Perrow derives from the Lords of the Manor who were the earliest known tenants here in 1286.

There is no surviving record of a village at Thorp Perrow. In the 16th century it was parkland over which Henry V111 hunted and courted Catherine Parr, his sixth wife, who resided at nearby Snape Castle. Thorp Perrow is especially proud of its “Catherine Parr Tree” which has been proven to date back to 1535. This tree is located in the Summer Meadow and there are seats under it so as to reflect on the magnificence and longevity of our earthly companions!

The current use as an Arboretum was originally created by Sir Leonard Ropner (1895-1977) in 1931. Today it is considered to be one of the finest arboreta in the United Kingdom, and rated as one of the top ten by The Times. It has 48 champion trees in its collection of 1750 trees.
